Sidi Goma - The Black Sufis of Gujarat

India

"ecstatic power building slowly and steadily to a fever pitch" - NY Times

"Spectacular, mystical and - most importantly - fun, Gujarat’s Black Sufis are a revelation." - Rhythm Magazine

The exuberant energy and joy Sidi Goma brings to the stage are as captivating and powerful as their heritage is unique. These masterful dancers and musicians are descendants of East Africans who, in the 10th century, traveled across the ocean to India where they embraced the Muslim faith. Their performances begin with a traditional muezzin call to prayer. Then, as the music gradually gets more rapid and excited, the performers, celebrating their ancestral spirit, don peacock feather skirts and headdresses and perform a series of constantly evolving animal imitations (similar to Australian Aborigines), which climax in a spectacular coconut-breaking feat. The entire performance is an exhilarating experience!

Indians in Africa? Sure, particularly in South Africa. But Africans in India? Nearly unheard of. Well, it’s never to late for a new discovery. Sidi Goma’s the name and they are a black tribe of wandering fakirs, situated in the West-Indian state of Gujarat. As Muslim Sufis they are mystics who seek union with God through prayer, with no hunger for earthly riches. On stage, they perform their impressive rites for the audience’s benefit: a theatrical “prayer” consisting of joyful, but satirical dances of praise to their black saint, the merchant traveler Bava Gor. The concert/mass features intoxicating drum patterns, which “speak” the prayers in rhythmic language, supporting dancers who perform virtuosi feats of agility and strength, gradually reaching an ecstatic climax.

Sidi Goma was first discovered by Giant Magnet Producing Director, Brian Faker in 2003 when he took his annual pilgrimage to the WOMEX World Music Expo in Seville, Spain. Six years is not an unusual period of time for the artistic urge to invite a company to come into alignment with Giant Magnet’s timeline and budget. So when the fates collide, and a long-sought-after company can make it to our event, it’s cause for celebration. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to catch the exultant tour-de-force that is Sidi Goma- the Black Sufi’s of Gujarat!
